Wielding an unmistakable brand of Western Folk, Calgary Alberta’s Northern Beauties have now carved their name into the western Canadian musical landscape. The band was honoured with a pair of awards in 2016, a Western Canadian Music Award for best Roots Group/ Duo of the year and a YYC Music Calgary Award for Folk Recording of the year. With vocal harmonies as big as their ambitions, they capped off a remarkable year since releasing their debut EP in the spring of 2015.
With 2016 showcase appearances in Hamburg Germany at the famed Reeperbahn festival; a showcase in Warsaw Poland representing Canada; an Official Break Out West showcase; performance at the Calgary Folk Music Festival’s 2016 Block Heater Winterfest; a showcase in Music Calgary’s “SoundOff III”; a live performance broadcast on CBC’s Key of A, a feature performance for JUNO Fest and inclusion in the 2016 Calgary Folk Music Festival, its fair to say that 2016 has set the stage for their next step as a group in 2017. A focus on new songs and new recordings this year will make up the anticipated follow up to their successful EP, recording in September 2017 for a March 2018 release. To help usher this new chapter in the group signed on with Americana Music Publishing early in 2017 which brought them to Nashville Tennessee to showcase at the legendary BlueBird Cafe and a whole new attention to the group south of the border.
The debut EP charted on both national college stations and Alberta’s CKUA top 10, which helped push the band into the top 12 of the 2015 Alberta Peak Performance Project and gain Provincial wide recognition as a must see act.
The harmonies of vocalists Todd Stewart and Craig Aikman are a natural blend and the first year collaborating as the Northern Beauties was a duo vocal partnership that now underpins the bigger dimension of their music. In the fall of 2013 the duo recruited drummer / Erik Allen, bassist / Aaron Scholpp, Pedal Steel wizard / Charlie Hase and eventually in 2015 violinist / Jonathan Lewis. The new line up embodies what Stewart calls Western Folk – the distinct, bluegrass-infused contemporary folk sound of which the band is now considered to be a progenitor.
With a strong foundation and a following that continues to grow, the summer of 2017 sees the band appearing at a few select Music Festivals throughout Canada as they get ready for the next album.
The years of hard work, a dedication to strong material and an unforgettable live act have all started to pay off. It’s been a fast start for this Western Folk troupe who is establishing themselves as one of western Canada’s most exciting emerging bands.
